In 1907 schreef J.M.Synge over het harde, zware en vaak levensgevaarlijke bestaan van de bewoners van de Ierse Aran Islands. Hij wilde er Iers(Gaelic) leren maar de gastvrije eilanders vertelden hem ook over magische bronnen, bloedstollende belevenissen bij visvangsten in 'currachs' en slachtoffers van de druiden en de fairies'. Hij verhaalt over oeroude tradities die in zijn tijd al begonnen te vervagen. Zijn boek is een eerbewijs aan deze Kelten die duizenden jaren op de kale, barre en vlakke steenplaten in de oceaan leefden.

'A week of sweeping fogs has passed over and given me a strange sense of exile and desolation. I walk round the island nearly every day, yet I can see nothing anywhere but a mass of wet rock, a strip of surf, and then a tumult of waves.

Tim Robinson schreef in 1986 'Stones of Aran: Pilgrimage'. De Nederlandse vertaling(2004) heet 'De Aran-Eilanden.
De auteur verbleef vele jaren op het grootste eiland en schreef over elke bron, elk bosje, elke klif, iedere steen en alle magische en heilige plekken.
